LABOR IS THE IMAGE OF GOD IN MAN |
Labor is at the core of mankind’s essence and is the thematic focus of the national holiday we celebrate today.
As God finished creating the earth and the cosmos which now surrounds it, he created the one who would bear His image. As Genesis 9:6 makes clear, that image remained intact within all mankind in spite of the sin of Adam, our first parent.
Man first meets God as the God who works (Genesis 1). Because God placed His image within us, work and the creativity which inspires our work is second nature to us all. Without work, we lose the divine dignity which is a reflection of his image within us. |
God’s first charge to man (Genesis 1:28) was to transform His creation into that which is culturally meaningful (beginning with agriculture) and to procreate so that the earth is filled with divine image bearers who, through work, cause God’s creation to blossom and reflect His glory.
OUR CALLING TO WORK DEFINES US IN SIGNIFICANT WAYS.
This means we bring shape, purpose and usefulness to that which is latent in the creation.
IT MEANS WE LABOR.
While the origins of America’s Labor Day were not entirely wholesome or theologically well founded, we can use the holiday to reflect on man’s trajectory and his role in building churches, societies, and nations.
On April 10, 1899, the Governor of New York, in a speech at the Hamilton Club in Chicago, Illinois spoke about labor. He said:
I wish to preach, not the doctrine of ignoble ease, but the doctrine of the strenuous life of toil and effort, of labor and strife; to preach that highest form of success which comes, not to the man who desires mere easy peace, but to the man who does not shrink from danger, from hardship, or from bitter toil, and who out of these wins the splendid ultimate triumph. |
These comments were delivered a year before joining William McKinley’s successful run for the White House. Roosevelt would become President when McKinley died (September 14, 1901) from an assassin’s bullet (September 6, 1901). In his book, There’s No Free Lunch, economist David Bahnson wrote:
The main thing is this: human flourishing feeds the soul of mankind through earned success. |
Robert Sirico, founder of the Acton Institute, wrote this:
When you’re in a situation where people are bringing you things constantly, your entrepreneurial skills are dulled and your whole culture becomes deadened. Your personhood is disrespected.
“We have always been concerned that economic education – a real understanding of how a market functions – will first and foremost help the most vulnerable . . . Obviously, what helps the poor is access to work.
“But as we looked into the good intentions of so many people, we see that a lot of them just think that solidarity with poor people means giving them things, and from our understanding of how markets function, and from our understanding of human beings, you really find that human beings themselves are the producers of their own wealth and of their own way out of poverty.
“[We must show] how wealth is created, and that the nature of people and produce more than they consume. That’s called wealth: when you produce more than you consume.” |
Economics professor, Dr. Victor Claar’s insight into the relationship between economics and the Christian life includes this statement:
Work supplies the physical, psychological, artistic, and religious needs of communities extending to the ends of the earth. Furthermore, through work, we create abundance out of which we help meet the needs of others. |
See his book, Economics in Christian Perspective here.
I'll close today from this from the closing of David Bahnson's book, No Free Lunch:
There is no mechanism I have seen that more cultivates personal virtue or brings greater service to mankind than work. In work we can find purpose. We can meet the most selfish needs of our inner selves – that is, the demonstration of our capabilities – and yet, all the while achieve the most unselfish of aims – the service of others. Work (in human action) is the verb of economics. |
On May 18, 2026, GOP Gubernatorial candidate, Mike Mazzei, appeared on Trinity Broadcasting Network television to talk about his life philosophy of work as worship. __________________ |
POSTSCRIPT
My wife thought I should include some detail on how "Labor Day" became a national holiday. As I mentioned in my article, it was not particularly profoundly considered. It finds its genesis in the somewhat thin ideals of pragmatic and political considerations . . .
THE FIRST LABOR DAY WAS IN 1882, THOUGH IT WAS MORE OF A REGIONAL EVENT
Six years later, in 1886, things got nasty. On May 1, the Socialists and Communists, worked to turn “May Day” into the American “Labor Day.” More than forty years later, TIME Magazine reflected on the event in their May 13, 1929 issue. TIME remembered it this way:
To old-fashioned people, May Day means flowers, grass, picnics, children, clean frocks. To up-and-doing Socialists and Communists it means speechmaking, parading, bombs, brickbats, conscientious violence. This connotation dates back to May Day, 1886, when some 200,000 U. S. workmen engineered a nationwide strike for an eight-hour day. |
May Day riots (violence) continue around the world today and continue to focus on the worker.
However, on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland, in his second (non-consecutive) term, signed the Labor Day will into U.S. law to be celebrated on the first Monday of September. The political pressure beneath the law came from the labor unions with the Pullman Strike as the union headliner. |

TUCKER CARLSON AND THE MUSLIMS DON’T GET TO MAKE UP THEIR OWN JESUS |
On one of his recent podcasts, Tucker Carlson said that “The people in charge don’t want you to know this, but Muslims love Jesus.” Is this true? Do Muslims really love Christ? The answer is no; and not only do they not love him, but they deny who he even is.
PROOF?
Let’s go to one of Islam’s most “holy” sites – the Dome of the Rock – and read what they actually say about Jesus there. What did Muslims choose to inscribe on this building in the 7th Century as they were conquering Christendom? |
Here’s a summary of what is written on the outside of the building:
There is no god but God… He begetteth not nor was begotten… Praise be to God, who hath not taken unto Himself a son…”
And here’s what is written on the inside:
O People of the Book… Jesus is but a messenger of God… Do not say, 'Three.’ Desist! God is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. Now you might be asking, “Isn’t this a direct contradiction to how Jesus defines himself? Didn’t Jesus say he was more than just another “messenger,” and didn’t he say he was both God and God’s Son?
THE ANSWER IS YES, AND HERE ARE JUST A FEW EXAMPLES:
In chapter eight of the Gospel of John, Jesus says, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was, I Am,” and thus, he claimed the same name that Yahweh did when he defined himself to Moses.
In John chapter 10, Jesus doubles down and says, “The Father and I are one” and “whoever has seen me has seen the Father,” a claim of godhood so clear that the Jewish leaders immediately accused him of blasphemy and tried to kill him for it.
In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus unequivocally states that he is “Lord of the Sabbath,” a title reserved for God himself.
Then there’s John 3:16, the quintessential Bible verse, where Jesus says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life;” a declaration that God indeed does have a son, and that Jesus, himself is it, if there ever was one. |
The record is irrefutable. Jesus never pretended to be just another messenger of God but instead, he repeatedly said he was God: the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the Lion of Judah, the Good Shepherd, our redeemer, and our Lord.
Jesus was not just another wise man. He was the “Word” and “the Word was God,” and the apostles went to their deaths saying so!
THOMAS CALLED JESUS HIS “LORD AND [HIS] GOD.
John declared him to be the one “true God.” Paul said, “In Him all the fulness of deity dwells.” Peter called Jesus his “God and Savior.” And the writer of Hebrews was more than clear: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.”
The bottom line is that Tucker Carlson (as well as the Muslims that he seems so oddly determined to defend and elevate) doesn’t get to make up his own Jesus. And in that vein he’d do well to read these words from C.S. Lewis:
I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon, or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. |
Pretending to love someone while at the same time accusing them of either being insincere or insane - or even worse, a demon from hell – is at best self-refuting if not blatantly hypocritical. You can’t love Jesus while at the same time denying him.
IT JUST DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY. “Many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord…’ and I will say to them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me.” ~Jesus, The Sermon on the Mount |
