ELECTION DEBRIEF NOVEMBER 4

XI VAN FLEET DECEMBER 2

CHRISTIANITY

UNIVERSITY

NATION

Last Wednesday, Oklahoma’s next Governor demonstrated a clear commitment to Christ and Scripture. Keating, Mazzei, McCall, and Merrick stand as reminders that the Christian ideals that shaped the West remain both vital and necessary for its renewal.

We were encouraged by the strong attendance at our spring finale, and U.S. Senate candidate Ty England joined us with the country-western music that has long been central to his life and career.

Dr. Everett Piper will be featured in our weekly newsletter while I take the summer months to reflect and prepare for the fall season.

His contribution is especially timely, for as Dr. Piper argues in the following article, our culture is increasingly marked by an arrogance that dismisses the hard-won lessons of history.

As Dr. David Butterfield has observed, the West is now defined not by confidence rooted in conviction, but by a hubris that severs itself from the wisdom of prior generations.

That loss becomes clearer when viewed against the assumptions that once guided American public life. Before 2009, every President spoke persuasively about America’s Christian roots, and Christ’s role in culture was broadly acknowledged.

Historian Christopher Dawson rightly regarded Christianity not as a peripheral influence, but as one of the central forces shaping the course of history.

In his 1960 book The Historic Reality of Christian Culture, Dawson concludes that the church provides the light by which nations find their way.

That historical understanding also clarifies what is at stake in the modern university. Our society has declined in part because Western universities have abandoned a coherent concept of truth.

Institutions once devoted to the formation of wisdom and character now drift without moral or intellectual grounding. Near the end of his book, Dawson describes the university’s original purpose in these terms:

It was the union of the classical tradition of human letters – as represented by the liberal arts – with the Christian tradition of religious doctrine – as represented by the faculty of theology – which gave birth to the European universities.

That concern did not end with Dawson. In Contours of the Kuyperian Tradition, Oxford scholar Craig Bartholomew warns of the influence of what he called “a secular elite trained in the best secular Western universities.”

That critique applies with unsettling accuracy to universities across America and the broader West. Hollowed out by secularism, they have become ineffective because, once truth is abandoned, the university loses the very reason for its existence.

For that reason, as discussed at Wednesday’s gubernatorial forum, meaningful reform will remain elusive until a Governor makes the renewal of university regent boards an unmistakable priority.

Until that occurs, we will continue graduating teachers, administrators, legislators, and community leaders shaped by the very secularism that is corroding our culture at its foundations and accelerating its moral and intellectual decline.

If we fail to recover the truth that once formed our institutions, we should not be surprised to watch the civilization they sustained continue to erode.

CAL THOMAS IS RIGHT.

IRAN IS A THREAT!

This past Tuesday, Cal Thomas wrote an opinion piece for this newspaper titled, “Americans whining over gas prices ignore Iran’s greater threat.”

In his article, Mr. Thomas argued that our country is presently “plagued by complainers who whine about almost everything” and that “too many [of us] appear oblivious to the threat posed by Iran, preferring cheaper gas” to doing what is necessary to stop this evil regime from killing us.

Thomas contended that “[an] entitlement sentiment… has gripped so many Americans [that when our president] asks us to endure higher gas prices for a short time in exchange for Iran not getting a nuclear weapon” we respond with a “Let the devil take tomorrow. Help me fill up my tank for under $40 today” attitude.

After rightly juxtaposing this myopia with the numerous sacrifices that our grandparents made during World War II - sacrifices that stopped Adolf Hitler from acquiring an atomic bomb before we did and thereby saving millions from a fate worse than Auschwitz - Mr. Thomas concluded with this simple admonition: “Stop whining, America… Gas prices have been high for only a few weeks. The Great Depression and World War II spanned 16 years.”

In short, Cal Thomas was simply arguing that minor personal sacrifices, such as spending a little more for gas, are far less significant than what the "greatest generation" endured to protect and preserved the United States and its freedoms.

I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Thomas, and I’m more than happy to spend a little extra to fill up the tank if that will help stop Iran from having the military wherewithal to impose its will on the world, so I reposted Thomas’ article to my social media and encouraged all my “friends and followers” to read it.

And, you guessed it, I immediately received a contrary response: “Iran is a threat to Israel, not to the United States,” said one of my Facebook pals.

Now, aside from my “friend’s” cluelessness that the survival of our only trustworthy ally in the Middle East matters, how in the world could anyone be so dumb? “Iran is not a threat to the United States:” Are you serious?

A five-second Google search shows that for the past 47 years alone, this evil regime and its leaders have kidnapped, killed, maimed, and beheaded Americans across the globe. Here’s just a short summary:

In 1979, Iranian militants seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and held 66 Americans hostage for 444 days.

In April 1983, Iran backed the suicide bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, killing 17 Americans.

In October 1983, Iran’s leaders orchestrated the Beirut barracks bombing, which killed 241 U.S. military personnel, including 220 Marines.

In March of 1984, CIA station chief William Buckley was kidnapped in Beirut and later killed.

In December 1984, the Kuwait Airways Flight 221 was hijacked, and two American officials were killed.

In June 1985, the TWA Flight 847 was hijacked; a U.S. Navy diver was killed.

In July 1989, the Iranian-backed, trained, and funded terrorist organization Hezbollah kidnapped, tortured, and killed U.S. Marine Col. William Higgins.

In June 1996, the Iranian militants bombed the Khobar Towers and killed 19 U.S. Airmen and wounded nearly 500 other people.

In August 1998, the U.S. embassies were bombed in Kenya and Tanzania.  Twelve Americans were among 224 total dead.

In 2003–2011, Iran-backed militias killed at least 603 U.S. troops in Iraq.

In January 2007, the IRGC Quds Force and its operatives killed five U.S. soldiers in Karbala, Iraq.

In December 2019, an Iranian Kataib Hezbollah rocket killed a U.S. civilian contractor.

In January 2020, an Iranian ballistic missile strike on the Ain al-Asad Air Base in western Iraq injured 109 U.S. troops.

In March 2023, Iranian drone attacks killed an American contractor in Syria.

On October 7, 2023, Iran supported and funded Hamas’ killing of 46 Americans and kidnapping of at least 12 others.

In January 2024, Iran’s Kataib Hezbollah drone attack at Tower 22 in Jordan killed 3 U.S. service members.

The list goes on and on.  In addition to their ubiquitous calls for the “death of America” Iran and its proxies have killed, kidnapped, tortured, and raped, well over 1,000 of our nation’s citizens in just the past 50 years!

It is nothing short of astounding that someone would suggest that Iran is not a threat to the United States and its equally amazing that so many of us are unwilling to make a sacrifice as inconsequential as paying a bit more for gasoline if it will stop these mullahs from acquiring the means to do exactly what they have told us for decades they intend to do.

Cal Thomas is right.  We should all stop whining and just do our part. Paying a little extra at the pump is literally the least we can do to avoid having a mushroom cloud over Oklahoma and Kansas.
