CANADA'S

WARNING TO

AMERICA

WHEN A CHRISTIAN NATION FORGETS ITS GOD

Oklahoma Senator Shane Jett has returned from a goodwill mission to Canada, where he met with members of Parliament, the United States Ambassador, former Canadian cabinet minister Stockwell Day, and other national leaders.

His visit draws attention to a disturbing transformation taking place within Western Civilization.

Canada, once deeply rooted in Christendom, has experienced an extraordinary erosion of its Christian foundations. In their place has emerged a secular political culture increasingly willing to challenge traditional religious convictions.

Churches have burned. Pastors have been arrested. Government policies involving Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) have generated conflicts over parental authority, religious conscience, and the education of children.

HOW DID A NATION SO DEEPLY

ROOTED IN CHRISTENDOM

ARRIVE AT THIS POINT?

In 1497, John Cabot, sailing under England's King Henry VII, reached the shores of present-day Canada. Historical accounts associate his expedition with the planting of a Christian cross and the English banner.

The European institutions subsequently established in Canada emerged from a civilization profoundly shaped by Christianity.

Consider what occurred in the Canadian Senate in July 1906.

Senators were debating the Lord's Day bill, legislation concerning Sunday observance and the Fourth Commandment.

On July 9, Senator James McMullen of Ontario declared:

. . . we must not forget that we claim to be a Christian nation, we are a Christian-professing nation at least, and as such we should respect the laws of God.

Two days later, Senator William Ross of Halifax issued an even more sobering warning:

The individual or the family, the community, province or the Dominion which observes the Sabbath day as it should be observed, is one that will prosper; and if we are to enter upon the down-grade by setting at defiance the fourth commandment, we will go down as a nation by doing so.

THESE WERE NOT SERMONS

FROM CANADIAN PULPITS.

THESE WERE DECLARATIONS

FROM THE FLOOR OF THE

CANADIAN SENATE!

More than a century later, Ontario social critic and homosexual-rights activist Tom Warner acknowledged the magnitude of the transformation.

In 2010, Warner wrote:

There was a time, not so long ago, when Judeo-Christian values were indisputedly ‘Canadian values,’ when it was generally and willingly accepted that the role of the state was to promote and protect such values.

Warner was describing a historical reality, not necessarily endorsing its restoration. Nevertheless, his observation is significant.

According to Statistics Canada, the percentage of Canadians identifying as Christian declined from 77.1% in 2001 to 53.3% in 2021.

During those same twenty years, Canadians reporting no religious affiliation increased from 16.5% to 34.6%.

CANADA'S RELIGIOUS IDENTITY HAS

UNDERGONE A REMARKABLE

TRANSFORMATION.

Michael Wagner documents the nation's changing constitutional and cultural relationship with Christianity in Leaving God Behind: The Charter of Rights and Canada's Official Rejection of Christianity.

But the deepest question is not merely what happened in Canada's Parliament, courts, or universities.

WHAT HAPPENED TO

THE CHURCH?

What happened to the pulpits that once proclaimed the authority of Scripture?

What happened to Christian families committed to transmitting biblical truth from one generation to the next?

A civilization does not surrender its spiritual inheritance overnight.

The erosion begins when the institutions entrusted with preserving that inheritance lose confidence in the truths they were established to proclaim.

Jane and I recently returned from eight remarkable days in Jerusalem.

Standing among the ruins of ancient Israel, I was reminded of the warnings issued by the Hebrew prophets before Jerusalem's destruction.

Israel's greatest danger was not merely the foreign armies gathering beyond its borders.

It was the spiritual condition of God's people within.

The prophets warned that covenant unfaithfulness would bring national disaster. Yet the people imagined their institutions, history, and religious heritage would preserve them.

They were wrong.

THE GREATEST THREAT TO THE

PEOPLE OF GOD IS OFTEN THE

SPIRITUAL CONDITION

OF GOD'S PEOPLE

THEMSELVES.

Canada's experience raises an uncomfortable question for Americans.

Are we witnessing the consequences of political leaders abandoning Christianity?

Or are we witnessing the consequences of churches that first abandoned the convictions necessary to sustain a Christian civilization?

For if the spiritual foundations of a nation collapse, political victories alone cannot restore them.

Senator Jett's return from Canada gives Americans another opportunity to consider what is happening to our northern neighbor.

But the more important question concerns our own churches, our own families, and our own nation.

WHEN A CIVILIZATION FORGETS

THE SOURCE OF ITS MORAL

AUTHORITY, THE STATE

STANDS READY TO

OCCUPY THE

VACANT THRONE.

Surely judgment,

both now and then,

begins at the church of God!

JESUS WAS NOT A SOCIALIST

Last week in this column, I wrote that Europe and the United States need a Christian revival today, not a socialist revolution.

My argument was simple: Socialism is not the solution; it’s the problem. The destruction we’re seeing in the streets of France as well as our own backyard here in America is caused by the socialist creed, not solved by it.

CHRISTIANITY IS THE SOLUTION,

NOT STATE-IMPOSED COLLECTIVISM.

You don’t even need the Bible to make this point. History has shown that, in every case they’ve been applied, Karl Marx’s and Herbert Marcuse’s assumptions about class conflict, intersectionality, and forced redistribution end badly.

JUST LOOK AT THE 100 MILLION

DEAD AT THE HANDS OF THE

SOCIALIST REGIMES OF MAO, POL POT,

STALIN, AND CASTRO, BY WAY OF EXAMPLE.

If you want life and liberty rather than death and servitude, socialism simply does not work. It has a much worse track record than a constitutional republic built on the Judeo-Christian ethics of Christ and His Church.

To this argument, several readers immediately responded that I was guilty of presenting a false dichotomy in pitting socialism against Christianity. “Jesus, after all, was a socialist,” they argued.

IS THIS TRUE?

WAS JESUS A SOCIALIST?

In a word, no, and those who argue otherwise are either ignorant of the Bible or intentionally misrepresenting it.

The fact is that Jesus never taught or advocated collectivism, government largesse, or state-enforced redistribution of wealth and private property.

Yes, Christ condemned worshipping money: “for where your heart is there your treasure be also.”

Yes, Jesus warned that it was “easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven.”

Yes, he praised the widow for offering just a single “penny” because she was willing to give all she had to God.

And yes, some first-century Christians sold their possessions to support their fellow believers.

Still, none of this even remotely smacks of Bernie Sanders's and Zoram Mamdani's worldview any more than the Salvation Army’s Christmas bells and red buckets resemble the IRS.

Jesus never taught or advocated for government compulsion. Instead, he always focused on personal responsibility. Charity was the individual’s obligation, not the state’s. You will never once find Christ telling his followers to vote for the government to give more money to the poor. He told his followers to do it themselves.

Laurance Reed, President Emeritus of the Foundation for Economic Education, says it well:

Christians are commanded in Scripture to love, to pray, to be kind, [to give], to serve, to forgive, to be truthful, to worship the one God, to learn and grow in both spirit and character. All of those things are very personal. They require no politicians, police, bureaucrats, political parties, or programs.

Reed continues:

Christianity is not about passing the buck to the government when it comes to relieving the plight of the poor. Caring for them, which means helping them overcome it, not paying them to stay poor or making them dependent upon the state, has been an essential fact in the life of a true Christian for 2,000 years. Christian charity, being voluntary and heartfelt, is utterly distinct from the compulsory, impersonal mandates of the state.

Is Mr. Reed correct? Is this, indeed, what Scripture teaches?

Well . . .

HERE’S JUST A SMATTERING OF

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ON THE MATTER.

The apostle Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 9:7: “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

In his Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus calls the traveler “good” because he personally helped the stricken man at the roadside with his own time and money. Nothing in this story suggests the government was the solution to the other man’s needs.

Jesus adds in Matthew 26:11, ‘The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want' (Matthew 26:11). The key words here are ‘you can help [when you want].’ He didn’t say, ‘We’re going to make you help whether you like it or not.’

In Luke 12:13-15, Jesus is approached with a request for redistribution. ‘Master, speak to my brother that he divideth the inheritance with me,’ a man asks. Jesus replied, “Man, who made me a judge or divider over you?” Then he rebuked the petitioner for his envy. Doesn’t sound very socialist, does it?

Reed concludes:

Jesus clearly held that compassion is a wholesome value to possess, but I know of no passage in the New Testament that suggests it’s a value he’d impose by force or gunpoint—in other words, by socialist politics.

NO, JESUS WAS NOT A SOCIALIST.

He taught us to do the giving, not the government. Nothing in Church history or teaching says we are to shirk our responsibility to help our neighbor by passing it on to the state.
