THE MYTHOLOGY OF POLITICICAL LEFTISM |
The GOP candidacy of an advocate of homosexuality, the LGBTQ movement, and of the assault on the integrity of the Bible for the for Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction comes to me as a surprise.
This may be partly explained by the fact that Robert Franklin is a lifelong Democrat who registered as a Republican in 2024, presumably to become politically viable. |
Robert Franklin’s candidacy points to the disintegration of both the scholarship and the transcendent foundations which represent the nation’s history. Clearly, he has the support of many Oklahoma Democrats including the apparent support of Democrat candidate for Governor, Cyndi Munson.
Before I was aware of Franklin’s candidacy, I ordered the Fugelsang book he has promoted in his campaign assaulting the Bible and Christianity. John Fugelsang’s book, Separation of Church and Hate, is written for a naïve and uneducated public.
(I ordered a copy which had been withdrawn from a Lawrence, Kansas library in order to write a public response.)
Fugelsang employs a folksy and humorous writing style in his attempt to eviscerate the integrity of the Biblical documents. He aggressively assaults the New Testament teaching epistles of the Apostle Paul. |
His academic illiteracy is betrayed when he likens the Bible to, as he states, “The world’s longest game of telephone.” He writes:
When we read “the Bible,” we’re reading translations of translations or re-writes of copies of copies of stories, written by Greek-speaking believers, that had originally been passed down word of mouth, through the centuries . . . we don’t even know what the original authors of the Bible actually wrote . . . Copies were all made by hand, mistakes were made in the copies, and those mistakes later got copied . . . That’s how the Bible was written, friends.
Clearly, Fugelsang is no academic and he cares nothing for scholarship. I presume he collects his research from another anti-intellectual journalist, Kurt Eichenwald. Eichenwald's equally uninformed ideas were written in the January 2015 edition of Newsweek (published December 23, 2014). In that issue, he wrote, with an arrogance corresponding to the archaeologically unenlightened Fugelsang:
No television preacher has ever read the Bible. Neither has any evangelical politician. Neither has the pope. Neither have I. And neither have you. At best, we’ve all read a bad translation—a translation of translations of translations of hand-copied copies of copies of copies of copies, and on and on, hundreds of times. |
THE RAVINGS OF THESE TWO DANGEROUS MAD MEN WERE DEBUNKED LONG AGO
In 1947, a Bedouin shepherd boy was throwing rocks at his flock of goats which grazed near the Dead Sea. One of the rocks landed inside a cave and shattered a clay pot. The curiosity which followed led to the discovery of extraordinarily well preserved copies of the Old Testament scriptures dating back to the 3rd century B.C. One thousand years older than the Masoretic texts. |
It has been well established since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS) that there have been no changes or sloppy copying of the Old Testament manuscripts. The DSS, dating 1,000 years older than the Masoretic texts are, with only inconsequential variants, identical as illustrated in the texts below. |
Old Testament scholar, Dr. Walter Kaiser, writes:
In order to prevent any copying mistakes, each biblical book had as a colophon (end piece) the total number of consonants, the middle letter of the book by location and other mathematical devices that were used by the copiers to check and recheck their work. |
Paleographer and classical scholar Frederick Kenyon writes:
[The Masoretes] numbered the verses, words, and letters of every book. They calculated the middle word and the middle verse of each…
These trivialities… had the effect of securing minute attention to the precise transmission of the text; and they are but an excessive manifestation of the respect for the sacred Scriptures which in itself deserves nothing but praise.
The Masoretes were indeed anxious that not one jot or tittle—not one smallest letter nor one tiny part of that letter—of the Law should pass away or be lost. |
Regarding the New Testament (Greek) manuscripts, let’s begin with texts accepted by all as credible in the academic world. Beginning with Plato!
Plato lived from 427-347 B.C. We have seven ancient copies of his works. The earliest dates 900 A.D. There are 1,200 years between Plato and the earliest surviving manuscript of his writings.
For a more complete chart to include Aristotle, Homer, and others, see our Archaeology of the Bible page here.
We possess 5,600 ancient copies of the Greek New Testament with less than 100 years between the first copy and the life of the author. We have a fragment of John which dates to 20 to 40 years after his death.
Again, the comparison of all these thousands of documents yields 100% agreement on issues impacting theology and 99.5% agreement when we consider all the variations which are fundamentally all small nuances of grammar impacting none of the meaning.
I refer the reader to our files in the OCPAC Foundation website regarding further research.
Fugelsang includes a quote from a former South Carolina writer and former pastor, Desimber Rose Wattleton-Njie. She states:
The most common misconception in my opinion is that the Bible is the Word of God. This is false . . . The second most common misconception is that the Bible is inerrant . . . The Bible is many things, but the inerrant Word of God is not among them.
With the bible removed as the transcendent authority upon which people, societies, and nations build upon, Fugelsang is able, then to advocate concepts which are completely outside the realm of Biblical ethics.
Italian intellectual, Augusto Del Noce (1910-1989), warned about the dangers of the leap from transcendent authority (the Bible) to morality founded in human imagination, when he wrote (between 1970-1982) in his The Crisis of Modernity:
Surrealists were almost the only ones to realize a fundamental truth: the decisive battle against Christianity could be fought only at the level of the sexual revolution. |
A leader in this war against Christianity in favor of sexual liberation was Wilhelm Reich (1897-1957) and his book The Sexual Revolution. Like Fugelsang, Reich’s thought is based on the premise that there is no ultimate authority of order and of values.
Del Noce writes of the influence of Reich:
Thus, every trace is erased not just of Christianity but of idealism in the broadest sense of the word . . . What is man then reduced to, if not a bundle of physical needs. When they are satisfied, when every repression is removed, he will be happy . . . Through absolute, unlimited sexual freedom, man will free himself . . .
As we continue to see the path Fugelsang goes in his book (published 2025), we see that Del Noce, almost a half a century earlier, was correct.
Fugelsang, after eviscerating Scripture goes on to promote homosexuality and the LGBTQ lifestyle, abortion (important to free and uninhibited sex outside of marriage), homosexual “marriage,” and the complete ideology of the “Diversity Equity Inclusion” (DEI) religion better understood as “Division, inequality, and exclusion.”
Fugelsang and Franklin are both advocating a Christianity unhinged from the Christianity which built the West and built the American dream.
Another Italian intellectual and former President of the Italian Senate, Marcello Pera, wrote:
The apostasy of Christianity is exposing the entire West to the risk of a grave cultural and political crisis, and perhaps even to a collapse of civilization. |
I would say it is time the church awakened to the idea that its responsibility lies beyond the spiritual health of the individual but requires also a commitment to work together to build a godly culture.
As I pointed out last week, this means political activism at some level.

THE BIBLE IS TRUE HISTORY IS REAL and PEOPLE ARE EVIL |
Recently, Shabbos Kestenbaum, host of the podcast Theological, interviewed the Harvard Divinity School professor Rabbi David Wolpe. Dr. Wolpe is also the rabbi emeritus of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, California, and a scholar-in-residence at the Maimonides Fund.
On the show, Rabbi Wolpe denied the historicity of the Old Testament. For example, when asked about the story of Israel’s exodus from Egypt, he responded: “I don’t take these stories literally.” He then added, “Faith is not determined by empirical truth. We cannot turn to the Torah for scientific advice [or] for accurate historical accounts...” |
Dr. Wolpe also contended that the Bible is not static but rather an evolving document, and he then argued that “as society changes, so does the way that God instructs us change.” Finally, Rabbi Wolpe, defended same-sex marriage by indignantly asking:
Do you mean that the Torah says that someone’s deepest impulses are just evil? I just don’t believe that’s true. Whether you are Jewish or Christian (or neither), this should rightly cause you to raise an eyebrow or two. A professor from one of the world’s foremost theological schools just said he doesn’t believe in original sin or that the Exodus was real. I mean, what Bible is the man reading? |
Let’s first consider Wolpe’s assumption of human goodness. Everyone with a Sunday school-level understanding of the Bible should know that if there’s anything clear in both the Old and New Testament Scriptures, it’s that our desires are evil and not good. Here are just a few examples. Every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. ~Genesis 6:5 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked. Who can understand it? ~Jeremiah 17:9 Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous, no one who does what is right and never sins. ~Ecclesiastes 7:20 The same destiny overtakes all. The hearts of people… are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live. ~Ecclesiastes 9:3 They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good… All have turned away; all have become corrupt; no one does good… ~Psalm 14:1-3 “There is none righteous, no, not one… their feet are swift to shed blood…” ~Romans 3:10–18 For out of the heart of man come evil thoughts, fornication, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. ~Mark 7:21,22 NOW LEST I BE ACCUSED OF JUST THUMPING MY BIBLE . . .
IT IS INCONTESTABLE THAT THEISTS AND ATHEISTS ALIKE HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED THE SAME.
For example, in The Rape of Nanking, Iris Chang states:
Almost all people have this potential for evil, which would be unleashed… under certain…social circumstances.
Paulo Coelho echoes the same in his book, The Devil and Miss Prym. He writes:
About the nature of human beings, I discovered that confronted by temptation, we will always fall. Given the right circumstances, every human being on this earth would be willing to commit evil. |
Then there is the seminal quote of G.K. Chesterton, who once quipped:
[Some intellectuals] dispute original sin, which is the only part of Christian theology which can really be proved.
He then went on to bemoan that:
Some followers of [these new theologians] admit divine sinlessness, which they cannot see even in their dreams. But they essentially deny human sin, which they can see in the street. |
And finally, we have C.S. Lewis who succinctly added:
The depravity of man is at once the most empirically verifiable reality but at the same time the most intellectually resisted fact. |
Rabbi Wolpe’s argument for this metaphorical view of scripture, reminds me of my doctoral research at Michigan State University, some 30 years ago, where I attempted to define how contemporary evangelicals view of Scripture. I’ll never forget how one of my alma mater’s most iconic professors told me that the “death, resurrection, virgin birth and miracles of Jesus could be ‘message statements,’” and not “reality statements.” THIS LOW VIEW OF SCRIPTURE, WHETHER IT BE FROM CHRISTIANS OR JEWS, MAKES FAITH PALLID AND INCONSEQUENTIAL.
There’s no question the Bible features several genres of literature such as poetry, prose, prophecy, and parables. No one disputes that. But dismissing its historicity and reducing it all to feel-good allegories and metaphors ultimately makes it all meaningless to anyone but you.
WHEN CULTURE RATHER THAN GOD DEFINES YOUR FAITH, ITS IMPACT IS OF LITTLE CONSEQUENCE.
If your religion is indistinct from the history-denying existentialism of the alphabet soup world around you, your influence is reduced to nothing, and you will be ignored. When the salt has lost its savor... it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. ~Jesus |
