MACHIAVELLI IN OKLAHOMA POLITICS |
The appearance of Gentner Drummond as a public figure reminds me of the shift in thought Machiavelli brought to the political world in 1532.
In his brief commentary of Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince, author and professor W. B. Allen wrote this in a 1997 Yale University Press publication:
It is remarkable that so many of the architects of modern politics find Machiavelli’s Prince a source of inspiration and that so many of them defend Machiavelli against the adherents of religion and classical philosophy.
Machiavelli was the 16th century’s author of brazen, unabashed, and unapologetic narcissistic political theory advocating a clear separation of the transcendent from the political. For Machiavelli, God and government do not mix.

In chapter eighteen of The Prince, Machiavelli writes:
“A prince cannot observe all those things by which men are considered good. It is often necessary for the maintenance of the state, to operate against faith, against charity, against humaneness, AGAINST RELIGION.”
Fundamental to Machiavelli was rebellion against religion in the affairs of state.
As Professor Angelo Codevilla put it:
Machiavelli is more than a teacher of a list of evils. Rather, somewhat like the serpent in the Garden of Eden, Machiavelli leads modern man to grasp for the power to make his own good and evil for his own sovereign convenience.
On the level of political thought, the notion that people can create their own values long ago passed from heresy through controversy and into orthodoxy. |
Frankly, Drummond is one of many members of the 21st century political class who think along Machiavellian lines.
Drummond’s war on religion was magnified with his assault on the St. Isadore of Seville Catholic Virtual School.

Professor Allen closed his comments on Machiavelli by writing:
All modern thinkers who have wanted to be free to think without regard to the constraints of natural and divine law are the fruits of the Machiavellian revolution.

THE REPUBLICAN CANARY IN THE CAVE |
A metaphor often used to describe cultural warning signs is the “Canary in the Coal Mine.” It is a story that highlights how certain dangers in life, if ignored, could destroy us.
The origin of the “Canary” analogy dates back to the mining practices of American Appalachia, where coal miners would take a caged canary with them into the mines. They did this because the bird, being more sensitive to poisonous gases than humans, served as an early alert system.
Each day, as the men descended deeper and deeper into the earth, they would keep an eye on the canary, knowing that if it died, something was desperately wrong and that if they didn’t reverse course immediately, they would suffer the same fate as the little bird.
The moral of the story is clear: The canary was a harbinger of things to come. Those who ignored it did so to their own demise. |
Political, social, and economic systems have such canaries, and they come in the form of candidates. On the Democratic side, we have examples such as Graham Platner and James Talarico. On the Republican side, the poster child this year is a man named Gentner Drummond, who just emerged as one of two GOP candidates to advance to the August runoff for Oklahoma’s governor. |
Oklahoma is sometimes called the reddest of the red states. All 77 counties, for example, voted for Donald Trump in 2016, 2020, and 2024, and not one of these counties voted blue in the past five successive presidential elections. But despite all this, Gentner Drummond, a wealthy man who has repeatedly supported leftist Democrats over Republicans, has advanced to a runoff where many consider him to be the odds-on favorite to win. Here’s just part of Mr. Drummond’s resume: In 2020, Gentner Drummond gave $1,000 to Joe Biden’s campaign to defeat Donald Trump. When the media exposed this gift, Mr. Drummond claimed this was all a “mistake” and that he didn’t make the contribution himself, but that his “wife did it.”
Sidebar: Aside from how disingenuous such a “chivalrous” explanation appears, it also begs the question that if your spouse - arguably your most trusted political advisor - is this pro-Joe Biden, why should anyone with a conservative bone in their body vote for you? But I digress. |
The Oklahoma news source, the BatesLine, reports that Mr. Drummond has a long, established history of donating money to Democrats.
In 2004, Drummond gave $1,000 to Democrat Brad Carson's unsuccessful effort to unseat Republican Senator Tom Coburn and in the same year, Drummond gave $2,500 to Democrat Dan Boren's campaign to defeat a Republican for the U. S. House.
Public records also show that four-figure donations were made by Drummond to help other liberal Democrats in their unsuccessful campaigns to defeat conservative Republicans such Congressman Jim Bridenstine and Senator Jim Inhofe.
Note: as of this writing, Mr. Drummond has made no attempt to pin all these on his wife, but the day is young.
AND THERE’S MORE . . . A LOT MORE!
In 2023, Gentner Drummond, as Oklahoma’s Attorney General, partnered with extreme left-wing organizations such as the ACLU and the Freedom from Religion Foundation to deprive Oklahomans of their right to select a state-approved Catholic charter school as one of their schools of choice and Drummond fought against the Alliance Defending Freedom, one of the nation’s most conservative and successful law firms on matters of religious freedom in doing so. |
Finally, we have Mr. Drummond’s 2018 support of Chris Brecht for Oklahoma’s Judicial District 14 Judge.
MR. BRECH IS A MAN WHO BOASTS OF BEING THE FIRST PERSON IN OKLAHOMA TO OBTAIN A GENDER-NONBINARY BIRTH CERTIFICATE.
His legal priorities include attempts to defeat Oklahoma’s SB1140, a bill that protects the rights of Christian adoption agencies to place children in homes that share their religious values.
Brecht, with Drummond’s full endorsement, called the bill "hateful, discriminatory, and blatantly unconstitutional on its face." The fact that Gentner Drummond wanted this man to serve as a judge in the reddest of red states seems almost surreal.
THE LIST COULD GO ON AND ON . . .
Mr. Drummond’s giving history reads more like that of Barack Obama, Kamala Harris, and Joe Biden than that of an Oklahoma Republican. |
His candidacy is truly a Canary in the Coal mine, not only for Oklahomans but for all of America as well. We ignore it to our peril. |

Kendra Wesson is stepping aside from other responsibilities to work full time with Ryan Walters and the Teacher Freedom Alliance (TFA) with a goal of providing teachers a pro-America Christian environment within which to work.
Thus far, the effort has been massively successful as thousands of teachers are fleeing the pro-Marxist teacher unions including the National Teachers Association (NEA).

Then, on Wednesday, October 7, Dr. Lauren Schwartz will talk about her role in reversing the trend in academia regarding "gender affirmation."
Regarding November 4, we are waiting confirmation.
Our final 2026 meeting will be Wednesday, December 2 with former Chinese youth under Mao, the nationally known writer and speaker, Xi Van Fleet. |
