BOB LINN

The Iconoclastic Life

March is Women’s History Month. It is a timely moment to honor some brave Oklahoma women. This Wednesday, we are featuring those who rose up bravely to oppose the attempted 2023 take-over of the National Federation of Republican Women by a group of leftists.

We must all oppose the many lies of the left lest we become accomplices in its deceptive messaging. Silence is the malady of those with an empty soul. A soul shaped not by transcendent reality, but rather the lifeless materiality of secularism.

Former President Herbert Hoover wrote in a posthumously published memoir of the New Deal:

The world is in the grip of a death struggle between the philosophy of Christ and that of Hegel and Marx.

If unopposed by the people of God, the hard left would complete their dark and insidious mission to radically transform America. They would destroy us, and in the process, they would destroy the West.

In 1644, John Milton wrote his Areopagitica. It was a plea to the Parliament of England. The goal was to affirm the citizen’s use of free speech. His twelve-page essay states the despicable nature of the one who observes evil but says nothing to eviscerate it.

He writes:

I cannot praise the hidden and silenced virtue, unexercised and unspoken, that never ventures out and sees her advisary, but slinks out of the race where that immortal garland awaits.

Milton’s comments suggest that in a world in which there is evil, the absence of conflict is contemptible. Not to enter the battle for the future of civilization is inhuman.

As Gabriel Vahanian stated in an even more strident fashion, to posture oneself as a Christian without iconoclastic (challenging false idols and paradigms) qualities  is to assume a counter-Christian posture. We must address the destructive nature of the secular mind and the threat of human carnage in its wake.

To be true to Christ is to obey Scripture. Paul summarized the core of the missional elements of the Old Testament church in his letter to the Church in Ephesus exhorting them to

Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. (Ephesians 5:11)

Being a watchman on the walls of society and culture is inherent in the teleological nature of mankind. It is man’s purpose to imitate the Image of God within him by conforming his life to the purposes of God for him. We are to exercise dominion over the earth (Genesis 1: 26-28) and, as a part of that, to guard, protect, and nurture his developing earthly kingdom (Genesis 2:15).

Well before either the Apostle Paul or author John Milton issued their admonitions, Moses made clear in Deuteronomy 11-13 that to expose sin in the culture by the people of God is mandatory. We are to exercise the divine image we bear and guard and protect the developing affairs of God on the earth.

This article opened with a picture of one of the few representatives of the German church to speak out against the butchery, starvation, torture, and mass murder of the German high command. He was not intimidated by the face of evil. He recognized it, spoke to it, and paid with his life.

He left behind admonitions which have echoed in the ears of the church ever since. To be silent as evil progresses is to be complicit in the evil itself.

I began this article by talking about our meeting Wednesday and the role it plays in highlighting the amazing accomplishments of our Oklahoma women. Women who spoke out in order to right a wrong.

Maria Wittner was a Hungarian woman and a freedom fighter. She was acclaimed as a Hungarian hero. Rod Dreher quotes her in his book, Live Not by Lies. Rod quotes her as saying:

If your soul is free, then your thoughts are free, and then your words are going to be free. What is fear? Someone who is afraid is going to be made to do the most evil things. If someone is not afraid to say no, if your soul is free, there is nothing they can do to you.

I’ll quote Russian Baptist Pastor Yuri Sipko. Dreher quotes his words in his book:

You need to confess him and worship him in such a way that people can see that this world is a lie. This is what reveals man as an image of God.

Don't miss an amazing story of bold and cunning planning on the part of some Oklahoma women to stop a Marxist take-over of the National Federation of Republican Woman last fall. A group of women who strategized and spoke out regarding evil in their midst.

AND, DON'T FORGET!

ANOTHER BOLD WOMAN
