THIS WEEK At OCPAC: Robin Khoury

OCPAC Weekly Insights
2/25/19

THIS WEEK
1. At OCPAC: Robin Khoury

Little Light Christian School is unique. There should be many more like it! She provides a Christian Education to the children of those incarcerated.

Robin Khoury has been working full time as Principal of the Little Light Christian School since fall of 2012. The school is located on 9.6 acres near the OKC Zoo. It is debt-free thanks to a major gift from the JASCO Hope foundation. The school accepts no government funding!

Robin is a member of the Oklahoma Children of Incarcerated Parents Task Force. She is also a badged Department of Corrections volunteer and a volunteer chaplain for the Federal Transfer Center.

It is the only school of its kind to our knowledge. Come hear her amazing story!
2. Also at OCPAC: Reed Downey
Reed will spend just a few minutes addressing the need for help in getting the Bible into the Government schools.

Reed served with the conservative Professional Oklahoma Educators as vice Chairman of the POE Foundation.

He was also appointed to serve on the Oklahoma Education Oversight Board.

1. OCPAC this Wednesday, February 6th, at OLIVET BAPTIST CHURCH: Little Light Christian School
2. Reed Downey Offers A Brief Presentation:
A little-known opportunity to get Bible into the Government Schools.
3.  Opportunity for Transformation by Bob Linn
Robin Khoury has, for the past 7 years, cared for the educational needs of the children of incarcerated parents. This is an undeveloped arena of the American cultural landscape which awaits the ingenuity of God’s people. Transformation of this largely ignored piece of Oklahoma society depends on our engagement.

Incarceration carries with it penalties for innocent children whose material security is significantly reduced. This impact begins with the arrest of a parent and continues through the trial and subsequent prison time.

Biblical Law avoids much of the economic impact by not prescribing prison for any offence. Biblical Law mandates restitution for all criminal acts. Better for the offended and better for the offender. In savage crimes (rape, murder), the Bible prescribes the death penalty when there are adequate witnesses.

Our current justice system clearly provides an opportunity, perhaps even an obligation, for the people of God to address the collateral damage which is born by innocent children who are unable to help themselves.

In Matthew 25, Jesus spoke of His return in glory. He spoke of gathering the nations. He spoke of placing the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. “Then, the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come … inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'”

Come find out how you can help in the vital and effective ministry of Little Light Christian School.

This week, OCPAC will address your mission!

Come help us re-direct Oklahoma's future.

4. Collateral Damage of American Justice
A SHARED SENTENCE:
The Devastating Toll of Parental Incarceration on Kids
The Annie E. Casey Foundation is a private philanthropy. Two years ago, they issued a report which states in part:

"... millions of children are suffering the consequences of their parents’ incarceration ... They feel it when their refrigerator is bare because their family has lost a source of income or child support. And they feel it when they hear the whispers in school, at church or in their neighborhood about where their mother or father has gone."
INCARCERATION
and Children's Outcomes
Dr. Leila Morsy
University of New South Wales
"Independent of other social and economic characteristics, children of incarcerated parents are more likely to: drop out of school; develop learning disabilities, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); misbehave in school; suffer from migraines, asthma, high cholesterol, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and homelessness"

THE IMPACT OF INCARCERATION
On Dependent Children
Eric Martin, Social Science Analyst
National Institute of Justice (NIJ) office of Research and Evaluation
"Children whose parents are involved in the criminal justice system, in particular, face a host of challenges and difficulties: psychological strain, antisocial behavior, suspension or expulsion from school, economic hardship, and criminal activity. It is difficult to predict how a child will fare when a parent is intermittently or continually incarcerated, and research findings on these children's risk factors are mixed."

THE CHRISTIAN
and the Criminal Justice System
Jim Liske
President and CEO Prison Fellowship Ministries
Jim's comments below tell us that we have quite an opportunity to remediate a hidden but significant portion of American culture. A slice of society who may just want our help!
"The United States makes up 5 percent of the world’s population, but it has 25 percent of its prison population. That translates to 2.3 million—or 1 in 33 Americans ... And then there are the children. 2.7 million children—or 1 in 28—have a parent who is incarcerated. For black and Hispanic children, the percentage is even higher."

6. Joseph Silk: SB 13 still has life Nathan Dahm co-author
ABOLISH ABORTION TODAY!
MEET ON SECOND FLOOR ROTUNDA 2 PM TODAY!
(Be there early, as parking will be tough)
I told you last week that Joseph Silk's bill would not be heard. At that point, the committee chairman has indicated that he would not hear SB13.

However, the door has in fact not been shut. Today at 2 PM, there will be a rally in the second floor of the rotunda. Join us tomorrow as the Senate enters this final week to pass bills from subcommittees.
7. Paul Blair's Protect Life Bill to Abolish Abortion Filed Again by Nathan Dahm
NATHAN DAHM'S ABORTION BILL
HB1182 | SB867
In 2016, Paul Blair and Dan Fisher led a major state-wide effort to pass SB1552 which passed both the House and Senate only to be vetoed by then Governor Mary Fallin. This year, Nathan Dahm is running this bill again. As you probably remember, it would remove the medical licence from any doctor who performed an abortion.

Had the Governor signed it, one soon-to-open abortion clinic stated they would not open their doors.

The bill this year is SB867.
Join us at OCPAC. (Bring Your Own Lunch.) We ask for a $2 donation to Olivet Baptist Church to pay for utilities. THANKS!
I'd like to invite you to bring your children and grandchildren to the weekly OCPAC meetings. Build a foundation for the role of Biblical thought in their political views. Only as we train our future leaders will we be able to anticipate the maturing of the Kingdom of God expressed both through the church and through the State.
LAST WEEK:
The State of the Oklahoma Senate
8. Nathan Dahm
Nathan Dahm did not disappoint as he provided perspective on the Oklahoma Senate and many of the bills we are all interested in.

He is author on two abolition bills in the Senate. SB 13 and SB 867.

SB 867 ran three years ago with quite a bit of effort behind it. This was part of the Protect Life and Marriage Campaign. Three years ago, it passed both House and Senate only to find itself on the stack of Mary Fallin's vetoes.
BRING YOUR OWN LUNCH
Our $10 lunch arrangement was not working well, so at this point, we are open to ideas.

You are most welcome to bring your own lunch. I only wish I still had my Roy Rogers lunch pail! Or was it the Lone Ranger?

Tea and water will be provided.
