NATIONAL DESTINY AND THE MISSION OF GOD |
AMERICA'S DECLARATION THE CHURCH'S MISSION THE FUTURE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION
Two hundred fifty years ago, fifty-six men pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to the birth of a new nation.
Their Declaration of Independence did not emerge from an intellectual vacuum. It was the fruit of nearly 2,000 years of Christian thought and the construction of Western Civilization.
AMERICA'S DECLARATION COULD NOT HAVE BEEN WRITTEN APART FROM THE DEVELOPMENT OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION, THE PRODUCT OF CHRISTIANITY.
The undertaking of our founders was rooted in the 4,000-year-old idea that nation building was the mission of the church and God’s promise to Abraham that through him, God would bless all the nations of the earth. |
THE DESTINY OF NATIONS HAS ALWAYS BEEN CENTRAL TO THE PURPOSES OF GOD.
The prophets Isaiah and Micah envisioned a day when nations would stream to the mountain of the Lord, seeking His instruction and learning to walk in His ways. See Isaiah 2:2,3 and Micah 4:1,2
Before Jeremiah was born, God appointed him a prophet TO THE NATIONS.
The Psalms declare that all nations belong to God and will one day worship before Him.
Jesus taught His disciples to pray:
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, ON EARTH as it is in heaven.
And His final commission to the church made our mission clear:
MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL THE NATIONS!
Christ envisioned nations whose peoples, institutions, and cultures would be transformed by the truth of the Gospel.
Christ did not envision a church filled with individuals detached from the heartbeat of culture.
THE GREAT COMMISSION WAS NEVER A RETREAT FROM CIVILIZATION.
IT WAS A COMMAND TO CARRY THE AUTHORITY OF CHRIST INTO EVERY CORNER OF THE EARTH.
THE NATION AS A SOUL
The nineteenth-century French philosopher Ernest Renan described a nation as a soul, a spiritual principle. |
He understood that a nation was something more than geographical boundaries, economic arrangements, or governmental institutions.
A nation possesses a common memory, a shared inheritance, and a sense of collective destiny.
When the church fails to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, that national inheritance is abandoned. When the people entrusted with its spiritual health forsake their calling, the living soul of the nation withers.
Looking across America, from our classrooms and libraries to our universities and cultural institutions, ideas once regarded as incompatible with biblical morality are increasingly celebrated.
The question confronting the American church is not primarily what has happened to our culture.
The first and fundamental question is:
WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE PEOPLE OF GOD?
The ancient Israelites provide a sobering warning.
Delivered from Egyptian bondage, they were called to possess the land in which the Redeemer of mankind would eventually be born.
Yet, standing at the threshold of their inheritance, they refused to trust God's promise. The book of Numbers records the consequences.
An entire generation perished in the wilderness, buried in forgotten graves, while their children inherited the assignment their fathers had abandoned. |
As always, the purposes of God continued. But a generation forfeited its place in fulfilling them.
TO REJECT GOD'S CALLING IS NOT NEUTRALITY. IT IS REBELLION AGAINST HIS KINGDOM.
THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CHURCH
The second book of Chronicles contains one of Scripture's most extraordinary declarations concerning the healing of a land.
God does not begin by addressing pagan rulers, unbelieving philosophers, or hostile political movements. He addresses HIS OWN PEOPLE.
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
That promise was originally spoken to Israel. Yet its enduring call to repentance confronts every generation of God's people.
The spiritual condition of a civilization cannot be separated from the faithfulness of those commissioned to bear witness to God's truth.
CULTURE IS OFTEN THE MIRROR OF THE CHURCH AND ONE OF THE CLEAREST INDICATORS OF ITS HEALTH.
We condemn the condition of our universities, lament the corruption of our institutions, and denounce the moral confusion of our age. While we remain the spoiled and lethargic children of the King. |
THE TORCH OF LIBERTY
Two hundred fifty years ago, America's founders drew upon a Christian intellectual inheritance that had shaped Western civilization for centuries.
Among them were Episcopalians, Anglicans, Presbyterians, and men from other religious traditions.
Their struggle for independence became so closely associated with Presbyterian resistance to royal authority that the American Revolution was sometimes characterized in Britain as a "Presbyterian Rebellion."In other words, it was a nation which was birthed not on secularism but, rather, in the church.
They believed that legitimate government was accountable to a moral authority higher than earthly rulers.
Their Declaration announced that human rights were endowed by the Creator, not bestowed by the state. It was in Christendom that the torch of liberty was lit.
THE GREATEST THREAT TO AMERICA'S FUTURE IS NOT THE HOSTILITY OF THE WORLD . . .
BUT THE UNFAITHFULNESS OF THE CHURCH TO ITS DIVINE ASSIGNMENT.
Whether its light will illuminate future generations depends, in no small measure, upon whether the people of God rediscover their calling. |
THE DESTINY OF NATIONS IS CENTRAL TO THE PURPOSES OF GOD.
IT MUST ONCE AGAIN BECOME CENTRAL TO THE MISSION OF HIS CHURCH. |
Surely judgment, both now and then, begins at the church of God! ~ I Peter 4:17 |

MULTICULTURALISM IS THE DISEASE, NOT THE CURE |
What if I told you that nothing happening in Europe should surprise you?
What if I said that the chaos in Paris, Milan, and London was inevitable, that multiple political scholars and noted theologians have warned of this social collapse for decades, and that they even identified its cause?
What if I said the root and branch of everything that ails us right now is multiculturalism and that Jesus himself even told us so? |
Before we get into all the warnings we’ve ignored about Western civilization's collapse, let’s first define our terms. Let’s start with the root word of multiculturalism. Let’s start with the definition of the word “cult.”
The word “culture” comes from the Latin noun “cultus,” which derives from the verb “colere.”
These are agrarian terms describing how rural people cared for the land and looked after it. Thus, to “cultivate” a field meant to plow it, plant the seeds, and, ultimately, reap a harvest of a desired crop.
Likewise, a farmer was called a “colonus” or “cultivator,” and a farm was called a “cultura” or colony. |
This orderly, focused work of “cultivating” produced “cults,” or “colonies.”
In other words, cities and states grew up around such activity: “Cultivated” fields led to “cultured” communities.
As fields with orderly, parallel rows produced predictable food, so did the “culture” of each town and village produce a shared and orderly morality and ethical life among its people.
The concept of “tilling the soil” and “tilling the mind” were understood hand in glove. To be “cultured” meant being educated in the values, religion, and ideals of one’s own people, tribe, family, or “cult;” to “cultivate” the soul through proper ritual, behavior, and respect for God.
By and large, the pejorative definition of “cult” didn't emerge until the 1900s. It is then that it came to mean a small, dangerous, or heterodox religious group. These negative inferences largely developed in American literature, apologetics, and sociology in the early twentieth century.
Evidence of this later evolution appears in older books on Christianity and religion, where "cult" often still retains its neutral meaning.
The cult of the saints, for example, is not nefarious at all. It simply refers to the veneration of the faithful, without any sinister implication of deviant or heretical practice and belief. |
So, the point is simple. It wasn’t until the last hundred years or so that the word “cult” took on a negative meaning. Until then, people assumed nations and states were healthier and longer-lived if they shared a common “cult” or culture.
MONOCULTURALISM WAS BETTER THAN MULTICULTURALISM
HOMOGENEITY BETTER THAN HETEROGENEITY.
People rightly thought every country, town, and village needed a common glue to hold it together; otherwise, it would fall apart and fail.
And so we come to the chaos in France, Great Britain, and, yes, even here in America, in cities like Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and St. Paul.
WHY IS THIS ALL HAPPENING?
IT IS OUR FOOLISH EXPERIMENT WITH MULTICULTURALISM. |
NEO-MULTICULTURALISM, BY DEFINITION, EMPHASIZES DIVERSITY OVER UNITY.
It thrives on division rather than common cause. This worldview is the opposite of a “melting pot” of shared values.
Its agenda of intersectionality is one of class warfare:
YOU AGAINST ME US AGAINST THEM MEN AGAINST WOMEN GENTILES AGAINST JEWS BLACKS AGAINST WHITES MUSLIMS AGAINST THE WORLD
Multiculturalism’s goal is not assimilation. It seeks only to divide and conquer. It is the solvent that degrades the glue, i.e., the “cult” that once bound people together in the first place.
The list of those who have warned us of this is endless.
Allan Bloom, in The Closing of the American Mind, sounded the alarm against cultural relativism.
Arthur Schlesinger Jr., in his seminal work The Disuniting of Americans, warned that “ethnic particularism was fracturing a shared civic identity.”
Samuel Huntington, in The Clash of Civilizations, argued that civilizations are built on religion and shared meaning, not abstract universalism.
Thomas Sowell repeatedly attacked multiculturalism, saying that cultures are not interchangeable in their outcomes and that pretending otherwise serves no one.
In The Strange Death of Europe, Douglas Murray clearly said that mass immigration would inevitably erode European self-definition.
Robert Bork told us in Slouching Towards Gomorrah that radical multiculturalism would only end with America joining this biblical city in the ash heap of history.
And Jesus himself made it all very clear:
Every kingdom divided against itself is laid to waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. |
The moral of the story is obvious: Cultural suicide is inevitable without a shared national “cult.” Multiculturalism is the disease, not the cure. |
