WE MEET THIS WEEK!

WEDNESDAY APRIL 22

NOON

OKLAHOMA HISTORY CENTER

Country Western Star, Ty England traveled for years with Garth Brooks before going solo. Ty is an international singer and songwriter.

Since his childhood, he listened to Rush Limbaugh and has had a hankering to help turn the American ship of state to its North Star as a Reagan Republican.

He will sing for us and speak of his entry into the race of Markwayne Mullin's vacated Senate seat.

Dr. David Anderson is a devout Christian who focuses, in part, on the many Christian elements embedded in the world's classic literature.

He has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to prepare a curriculum for high school students to reveal the profound influence of Shakespeare on both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

A great meeting for all of us and

our young folks in particular!

WESTERN CIVILIZATION NEEDS A

POLITICAL LEADER TO RESTORE

OUR EDUCATIONAL ROOTS

I was a bit shocked to learn last week of the defeat of Hungary’s Victor Orban.  For sixteen years, he has become an international superstar by leading that nation in a Christian direction.

However, the new Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, is also a Christian conservative committed to leading Hungary by maintaining, in his own words, a “national, Christian, conservative direction.”

The West will not recover its stability, strength, and wholesome nature until the nations rediscover their Christian foundations.  Nor will Oklahoma lead the way in restoring America’s cultural tapestry without leadership who understands that the security and prosperity of the ship of state are linked to Christian thought.

This will require the restoration of Christianity in education.  Until the people of Oklahoma possess a system of higher education that is grounded in the historic faith of the nation, we will continue to produce teachers, administrators, and curriculum unable to prepare our youth to develop the state of Oklahoma into a robust society capable of becoming a light to the nation.

Philosopher and theologian Dr. Gordon Clark was one of America’s most brilliant thinkers.  He wrote more than forty books and in 1952, Dr. Gordon Clark wrote A Christian View of Men and Things.

In his opening salvo, he spoke of the relative peace of nineteenth century.  That would change with the rise of atheism and political tyranny in the twentieth. Dr. Clark connects the health of nations to Christian education.

He writes:

The comparatively peaceful nineteenth century reflected the substantial unanimity of opinion and educational aims of Western civilization.  Particularly in Great Britain and America the prevailing philosophy was broadly Christian.

People rather consciously believed that God more or less directly governs the universe, and the curricula of American colleges unusually culminated in a course in Theism.

For over a century Bishop Butler’s famous anthology of Religion was a standard textbook, and toward the end of that era James Orr’s The Christian View of God and the World became almost as popular.  Today, all that has changed.

Dr. Benjamin Rush was a leader of the American revolution and a signor of the Declaration of Independence.  In his 1786 plan for education in Pennsylvania, he wrote:

Religion is the foundation of virtue; virtue is the foundation of liberty; liberty is the object of all republican governments; therefore, a republican education should promote religion as well as virtue and liberty.

The degree to which our gubernatorial candidates address the need for regent boards who understand that American exceptionalism is rooted in the study of Scripture will be an indicator of the intellectual and spiritual substance of our candidates.

Our university regents hire and fire our university presidents and it is our university presidents who determines, among other things, the direction of the university’s college of education.  And the university colleges of education determine the trajectory of education from kindergarten through high school in Oklahoma.

__________

Jane and I just finished a mini vacation as family from Colorado to North Carolina returned home yesterday.  It may take us a day or two to recover!

I am grateful for the work of those who continue the work of building Christ's kingdom here on earth.

A special thanks to Linda Haneborg who over the weekend secured the talents of country western artist Ty England.  He will give Wednesday’s meeting a special spark with his musical skills and with his passion to reignite the nation's Christian foundations.

Dr. Anderson will address the wealth of historic Christian content in the classics of the West as he discusses Trump’s plans to beef up the American classroom and secondary education.

WOKE RIGHT SEEMS AS

CLUELESS ABOUT THE

BIBLE AS WOKE LEFT

Last week, in this column, I criticized Tucker Carlson for his recent comments about the Biblical book of Esther.  More specifically, I challenged his shocking ignorance of, and seemingly knee-jerk disregard for, the Old Testament portion of the Bible.

In conclusion, I suggested that Mr. Carlson’s constant twisting and manipulation of Scripture is evidence of either terrible confusion or intentional deceit and that people would be wise to stop listening to his antisemitic/pro-Islamic tropes.

In response to all this, one of my woke-right critics took me to task and claimed that my defense of the Old Testament was evidence of an affinity for the “raw hatred” embodied in the book of Deuteronomy as opposed to the teachings of Jesus.

Perhaps you’ll find my rejoinder interesting and, hopefully, instructional. Here are my challenger’s exact words along with my subsequent response.

Critic: “You know, and I know that the raw hatred embodied in Deuteronomy is diametrically opposed to the message of Christ, yet you prefer the former. Why is that?”

My response: By “raw hatred,” what do you mean?

Perhaps you mean the “raw hatred” that Jesus quoted no less than three times in his battle against Satan’s temptations in the wilderness?

You know, when he responded to the Devil’s schemes by saying, “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God (Deuteronomy 8:3), and “you shall not put the Lord your God to the test (Deuteronomy 6:16), and “you shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve (Deuteronomy 6:13).

Or maybe you mean the “raw hatred” of Christ, when he quoted  Deuteronomy 6:5 and said, “The greatest commandment is this: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength,” and then concluded by adding Leviticus 19:18, “and love your neighbor as yourself.”

Or maybe you mean the “raw hatred” of the Sermon on the Mount when Jesus preached against adultery (Deuteronomy 5:18), murder (Deuteronomy 11:17), as well as lying and breaking your word (Deuteronomy 23:21).

IS THIS THE “RAW HATRED”

YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT?

Or maybe you mean the “raw hatred” of our Founding Fathers — you know, the ones like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Alexander Hamilton, who quoted the book of Deuteronomy more than they referenced Hobbs, Locke, Hume, Plato, Cicero, and Montesquieu combined.

IS THIS WHAT YOU MEAN BY “RAW HATRED?”

Or maybe it was the “raw hatred” of Ezra Stiles, President of Yale, who in 1760 urged all Americans to find inspiration and courage in the story of Deuteronomy 26:6-9, where “The Lord freed us from Egypt by a might hand, by an outstretched arm and by awesome power and by signs and portents, he brought us to this place and gave us this land…”

Or perhaps it’s the “raw hatred” of Samuel Langdon, President of Harvard, who in 1775 said America should adopt the form of government that God handed down to Moses on Sinai and, thereby, recorded in Deuteronomy because “the Jewish government was a perfect republic.”

Or maybe it was the “raw hatred” of Thomas Paine, whom many argue was the most non-religious of all the Founding Fathers, but yet used the Old Testament examples of David, Samuel, and Gideon repeatedly in his book Common Sense to condemn the “hardened and sullen temper” of “Pharaoh,” (i.e.,  King George) and the usurpation of human freedom.

Or maybe it was the “raw hatred” of Martin Luther King Jr., who implicitly referenced Deuteronomy as he famously shouted, “Let Freedom Ring!”

Are all of these examples of “the raw hatred embodied in Deuteronomy” that you contend is so “diametrically opposed to the message of Christ?”

If you still think so, may I suggest you do a little more reading?  I’d recommend you start with the gospel of Matthew, chapter 5, vs 18.

“I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” ~ Jesus (also known as the Second Person of the Triune God, and therefore just as much the author and inspiration of Deuteronomy and all the Old Testament as he is the New).
