BOB LINN

In Appreciation of Christopher Columbus

On the July 4 weekend of 2020, two markers of historic significance to the formation of the American Republic were assaulted. The statue of Christopher Columbus in Waterbury, Connecticut was beheaded and the Frederick Douglass statue in Rochester, New York was toppled.

The national leader of the strategy team of the Frederick Douglass Republicans is our guest at this Wednesday’s luncheon and today, we celebrate Columbus Day.

Most Americans today don’t appreciate fully the profound significance of either. Many are sheepishly embarrassed of what they fear might be true of Christopher Columbus.

On Wednesday, July 1, 2020, just before the weekend which saw the statue of Columbus beheaded, one of Oklahoma’s own U.S. Senators introduced federal legislation to eliminate Columbus Day as a federal holiday.

The national shift from a sense of pride and appreciation to feelings of disregard, aspersion, and shame reflects the power of education and media.

Editorial control of both American education and media at all levels has been transferred to those for whom leftist ideology represents the height of morality which then makes irrelevant the truth and the facts of history.

No single book has played so subversive a role in American culture as Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States. The cataclysmic impact on the public’s perception of the once beloved explorer and navigator has been effective and devastating.

Zinn’s History, a thoroughly sophomoric piece of pure Communist propaganda laced with inaccuracies and false innuendos, is now king.

Its influence has replaced

that of scholarly works.

The rising political winds of the radical left filled the sails of A People’s History. Its political rhetoric now enjoys a dominate presence in university libraries across America, our secondary schools, the minds of our children, and legislation in the U.S. Congress.

Georgetown history professor, Michael Kazin notes that Howard Zinn’s History has assumed the “force and authority of revelation.”

Dr. May Grabar has devoted much of her life to debunking the fake scholarship of Howard Zinn. She was born in Slavonia, then a part of Communist Yugoslavia. Those beginnings bred in her the instinct to recognize the dangerous and inhuman seeds of political tyranny.

Dr. Grabar knows the devastation of deadly ideologies with roots in Marxist revolutionary thought.

Hence, her disdain for the work of Howard Zinn. The Ph.D. she earned on American soil at the University of Georgia has provided a platform for her to help save America’s youth.

Grabar points out that Howard Zinn’s list of political targets feature his character assassination of the devout Christian explorer and evangelist, Christopher Columbus.

Zinn's story of Columbus

is a fabrication.

The People’s History accuses Columbus of abusing the natives he encountered. The facts are much different. Columbus led these indigenous peoples out of the atrocious and barbaric habits of cannibalism, slavery, and sexual abuse by introducing them to the Bible and Christianity.

Columbus had nothing but

compassion for the freedom

and for the eternal salvation

of the Indians.

He wrote:

I want the natives to develop a friendly attitude toward us because I know that they are people who can be made free and converted to our Holy Faith more by love than by force.

It is the Christ and Christianity of Columbus that the far left despises. They will spew all the lies they need to establish the secular world they envision.

Famed Italian intellectual, Augusto del Noce, spoke of Marx and his revolution saying:

Total revolution implies the replacement of religion with politics … the rejection of every form of dependence and thus the extinction of religion.

The Marxists now continue their march through America’s institutions. Misrepresenting the realities of world history is an important weapon in their arsenal as they seek to discredit Christ, the church, and those who seek to promote Christianity.

Grabar states that:

According Zinn, there’s no such thing as objective history.

Zinn himself stated:

The historian’s distortion is more than technical, it is ideological.

Grabar continues:

“Once ideology has become a moral virtue, Zinn can discount standards of scholarship as having to do with nothing more important than ‘technical problems of excellence’ – standards of no importance compared to his kind of history, which consists in forging ‘tools for contending social classes, races, nations.’

Thus, it would seem that the noble political purpose behind Zinn’s history justifies him in omitting facts that are inconvenient for his Columbus-bad-Indians-good narrative … For him, history is not about telling the story of what happened; it’s about being on the right side … Zinn did everything – misrepresented sources, omitted critical information, falsified evidence, and plagiarized.”

Stanford history professor, Sam Wineburg, pointed out with amazement that Howard Zinn’s readers actually believe him.

Dr. Grabar’s book, Debunking Howard Zinn, is a thorough examination of the literature available on the historical time periods about which Zinn writes.

Today is Monday, October 9, 2023.

We honor the devout Christian man who is so despised by the Marxist revolutionaries. We honor him because he was the devout Christian and visionary who sailed to the Americas and brought the light of Christ to the shores of savage cultures.

Like the Puritans who followed, Christopher Columbus sought to extend the Kingdom of Christ on this earth. This vision remains the teleological trajectory and mission of the Church today.

As George Orwell’s 1984 continues to sprout upon American soil, we remember the foreboding description of a System which, in the words of Michael Walsh, “could not endure free inquiry and, this could not allow a single ray of light in the darkness, lest the people glimpse the truth.”

Michael Walsh is a journalist, author, and screenwriter, whose work includes six novels, seven works of non-fiction, and a hit Disney movie.

His book, The Devil’s Pleasure Palace, is subtitled The Cult of Critical Theory and the Subversion of the West. He notes Orwell’s predictions regarding a future America where “sloganeering eventually must replace free inquiry if the System [the tyranny] is to survive and prosper.”

Like Grabar, Walsh complains about the departure from reality imposed upon academia by men who push Critical (Marxian) Theory.

He could have been speaking about Howard Zinn when complaining about the German philosopher, Theodor Adorno, and his work to repackage Marxist thought in New York, California, and with the Frankfurt School. Walsh complains about these anti-Christian Marxists:

Black is white, up is down, war is peace. What is, isn’t; and what isn’t, is. Who are you going to believe? Adorno, or your lying ears?

I think he grabbed a line out of the John Wayne film McLintock, when John Wayne, caught in a misunderstood and compromising position, asked his wife, played by Marlene O’Hara:

What are you going to believe?

What you see?

Or what I tell you?

Howard Zinn and the leftist academicians, now furthering the mission to re-write history, would have you listen to what they are telling you.

They hope you will not find the light of reality.

Toward the end of the last century, French philosopher and journalist, Jean-Marie Domenach, wrote that it is now unquestionable that:

Communists have become accomplices and victims of an empire that destroys spiritual freedom and puts nations in chains.

They have placed chains around American academia and covered it with the shroud of secularism.

Forty years ago, on May 10, 1983, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn delivered the Templeton Lecture. He recalled as a child hearing a number of older people offer the following explanation for the great disasters that had engulfed the Russian people:

Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened.

He then stated that now, fifty years later, he could make no more accurate statement than, "Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened."

Solzhenitsyn went on to remember what Dostoevsky, the great Russian novelist, said when he warned that “great events could come upon us and catch us intellectually unprepared.”

America has certainly lost her intellectual moorings.

America's Christian foundations are being ignored.

He noted Dostoevsky’s understanding that the French Revolution was founded upon a seething hatred of the Church. Dostoevsky said:

Revolution must necessarily begin with atheism

Scholarship and original documents, including the diaries of Columbus, verify that, unlike the secularists and their revolutionaries, Columbus freed the oppressed both physically and spiritually.

We should all follow in his footsteps

FROM THE JOURNALS OF

THE 16th CENTURY

In honor of the life of Christopher Columbus, here are notes from his journals which may be found in William J. Federer’s America’s God and Country Encyclopedia of Quotations.

Notes by Columbus on his interest in the book of Isaiah:

Our Redeemer Jesus Christ said that before the end of the world all things must come to pass. Isaiah goes into great detail in describing future events and in calling all people to our holy catholic faith. The fact that the gospel must still be preached to so many lands in such a short time, this is what convinces me.

Columbus wrote in his personal log that his purpose in seeking undiscovered worlds was to:

Bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the heathens

Bring the Word of God to unknown coastlands

In his book Libro de las profecias (Book of Prophecies), he cited a number of passages which guided him. Most were from Isaiah. Here are two that inspired his life's mission:

I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought Me not; I said, Behold Me, Behold Me, unto a nation that was not called by my name (Isaiah 65:1)

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations … and, lo , I am with you. Always even unto the end of the world. (Matthew 28:19, 20)

Ferdinand Columbus, the son of Christopher Columbus, wrote in the biography of his father, titled The Life of the Admiral Christopher Columbus:

The Admiral Christopher Columbus, asking Christ’s aid and protection in that perilous pass, crossed over with his company that Indian nations might become dwellers in the triumphant Church of Heaven.

There is reason to believe that many souls that Satan expected to catch because they had not passed through the waters of baptism were by the Admiral made dwellers in the eternal glory of Paradise.

Bartolome de Las Casas, was a priest who was called "the Apostle of the Indies." He was given the name because of his commitment to the oppressed and enslaved natives.

Bartolome knew Columbus personally. Bartolome's father and uncle were both shipmates and colonists under the Admiral.

In his History de las Indias, Bartolome described Christopher Columbus in the following way:

He was extraordinarily zealous for the divine service: he desired and was eager for the conversion of these people [native Americans], and that in every region the faith of Jesus Christ be planted and enhanced.

We are in desperate need of returning

our nation and our state to Biblical foundations.
