The Cultural Chaos in America Reflects the Intellectual Chaos in the Classroom | Herbert Schlossberg wrote his classic work, Idols for Destruction, following five years of research in the libraries of the University of Minnesota. He read volumes on economics, philosophy, sociology, political science, and ethics. The culmination of his research was what many consider to be the leading work on Biblical worldview available. It became a runaway best-seller.
The title, Idols for Destruction, is a quote from Israel’s “deathbed prophet,” Hosea. Find it in Hosea 8:4. Hosea was God’s final voice to the northern kingdom which had, after a golden age of prosperity, lost its sense of devotion to God. They fell in love, instead, with the fruit of the labor of man. Idols which, in time, destroy the men who worship them. | I mention this, because Hosea also wrote “My people perish for lack of knowledge.” See Hosea 4:6.
It was H.G. Wells who said in his massive The Outline of History, “Civilization is in a race between education and catastrophe."
~ H. G. Wells The Outline of History, P 504 | For many decades, America’s cultural prophets have been warning us of our coming epistemological pot holes. Men like Neil Postman, George Orwell, and Aldous Huxley foresaw an intellectual decline on America's horizon.
Epistemology is the foundation of knowledge. Hosea’s warning was that death would soon follow the intellectual decline of Israel. They had eliminated God as the fundamental principle of life and thereby emasculated reality. | Without a Christian core, culture becomes truncated & sterile. | America’s problem is the same as Europe's. We have jettisoned our Christian foundation in exchange for secularism.
Some in Europe are waking up. Leaders who are warning us of the eventual death of civilization which comes in the wake of secularism.
Hungary’s Prime Minister, Victor Orbin has declared that Europe’s decline is a result of its abandonment of the Christian faith.
He said, “The European crisis has come not by chance but by the carelessness and neglect of their responsibilities by leaders who have questioned precisely those Christian roots.” | As we have discussed the past two weeks, Karl Marx declared war on God. See the August 17 OCPAC newsletter here. Many have carried on his war. Forty years ago saw the publication of a book David Horowitz referred to as the Mein Kampf of the Hate America Left. The book was Howard Zinn’s “A People’s History of the United States” published in 1980. | “A Peoples History” is the most effective Marxist text in recent times. It quite effectively erased the truth of America’s Christian foundations from the minds of American children. It exalted atheistic foundations of the world's most ruthless Marxist leaders.
Flawed and dishonest, it has become the gold standard of America’s government schools. | Zinn’s pernicious evil is the benchmark of the teacher’s unions (NEA/OEA) and our Oklahoma classrooms.
It replaced the Bible on April 9, 2019 when JoBeth Hamon used it as the sacred text on which to place her hand when she was sworn in as the newest member of the city council of Oklahoma City. | The Zinn Education Project reaches not just high schools. It goes all the way down into elementary schools. Among its many “lessons” is one on Christopher Columbus. The elementary school students are asked to role-play in a make-believe trial designed to end in the conviction of Christopher Columbus for the murder of the Indians. Find the lesson here. | When the Smithsonian hosted a workshop for teachers, the seminar included promotion of the “Abolish Columbus Day” campaign. Your tax contributions paid for that seminar. | So, what more have your children been taught? Ho Chi Minh, the Marxist-Leninist Vietnamese revolutionary who executed tens of thousands of Vietnamese citizens, is presented as a hero.
The 1949 Communist take-over of China is presented by Zinn as “the closest thing, in the long history of that ancient country, to a people’s government."
Ignored is the mass murder of more than 40 million Chinese by Mao. | Also ignored are the more than 100 million murdered in the 20th century by communist dictators all over the world. | Harvard University history professor, Oscar Handlin used phrases like "fairy tale" and "cartoon anti-history" to describe Zinn's "history."
Stanford University history professor, Sam Wineburg, called Zinn's history a danger to our youth.
According to Wineburg, the danger is that it speaks to the emotional heart-strings of young people and, in doing so, extinguishes a student's ability to think. | Wineburg calls Zinn's "history" intellectual fascism. | Fortunately, Mary Grabar, a fellow at the Alexander Hamilton Institute, has written a comprehensive critique of Zinn's anti-American pseudohistory. It is a book that will cure what ails anyone you know who is under 30.

| LAST WEEK: RICK WARREN Amazing look at Oklahoma County Government | Rick Warren kept us well entertained while we were exposed to the realities of County government and its courts. | Having heard Rick Warren's entertaining and patriotic presentation last Wednesday, OCPAC recommends him to any groups looking for information and inspiration. He is a devout Christian with staunch Biblical principles and loyal to the U.S. Constitution.
His openness and forthright honesty was a breath of fresh air.
He recently had to stand up to the BLM protesters who sought to disrupt the ability of Oklahoma County Courts to provide speedy trials to hundreds awaiting their day in court.
He spoke of how grateful we should be that we have David Prater as our Oklahoma County District Attorney. Prater filed charges against BLM rioters for terrorism, arson, rioting, assault and battery on a police officer. Rioters burned a police car and attempted to burn down a bail bonds business.
This stands in stark contrast to Democrat leaders in other cities who have condoned this activity. | For those who want to listen again to last week's presentation:
| Why Do Democrats Hate Poor People? | Democrat politicians almost to the last one are huge supporters of the Teachers' Unions and public education REGARDLESS OF OUTCOMES. Therein lies the issue with public education. There are many fine public K-12 schools but there are a large number of public schools whose performance is not just poor but at disaster level. | For example, Oklahoma's children score no higher than 35% above the low threshold of "proficient" in any category! The scores in the inner-city schools are far worse. The mantra of Democrats and their union friends is that the only solution is more money.
When we have given them more money and the scores remain low in the inner-city neighborhood schools the poor are relegated to, they blame it on a lack of parental support. | Yet the Democrats will not 'buck' their voters in the public education unions and support allowing parent(s) to take the dollars we taxpayers allocate for educating our children for private schools. | They keep to themselves their belief that these poor inner-city kids, who many are minorities, are not capable of achieving NAEP scores as high as their suburban counterparts. It is their low opinion of the potential of the inner-city children that has led them to promote concepts like "social promotion" to prevent low self-esteem? | Republicans have long wanted a "money follows the child" approach which would let inner-city children attend private schools just like the elite Democrats like Michelle and Barack Obama's children.
There is no argument that a good education is the key to leaving poverty behind. The Democrats' resistance to school choice for a child is indicative of just how much they really care about poor minority children. They don't! | Anyone who thinks that minority children can only leave the ghetto via sports or music underestimates the brilliant minds that are going to waste thanks to Democrat policies.
I know personally. We had the privilege to raise two young black boys whose father had not even finished high school. They went to a private school and not only did well, but they excelled. Their GPAs and ACT scores rivaled any of their white counterparts.
