OCPAC Weekly Insights Monday Edition June 17, 2019
| | THIS WEDNESDAY'S OCPAC MEETING June 19, 2019 | | In Person & Live on Facebook COMMISSIONER KEVIN CALVEY | | Our speaker this week is a National Merit Scholar who graduated cum laude from the University of Dallas prior to graduating from Georgetown Law School. Aside from his service as an Oklahoma County Commissioner, he owns a growing real estate investment company.
In 2003, he put his business interests on hold to serve in Iraq on the battlefield as Captain Calvey. He survived more than 100 missions "outside the wire" and countless rocket attacks. The U.S. Army awarded him the Bronze Star Medal. He then continued his service here in Oklahoma as a Legislator in the Oklahoma House or Representatives.
His current leadership in Oklahoma County as a commissioner is already paying dividends to its citizens. He is addressing the egregious way those awaiting trial in jail (many arrested for non-violent offenses) are treated. The mis-behavior of the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s office has generated $20 Million in lawsuits at taxpayer expense as a result of their abusive treatment of inmates. Kevin considers this reprehensible and unacceptable in a Christian society. He and others are taking steps to put a stop to it!
He has many details to share with us Wednesday. Bring your family and friends to meet this courageous Oklahoman! | | Join us THIS WEDNESDAY! THE BORDER WALL and more... | | Law & Justice: An American Crisis by Bob Linn | Our speaker this week will be making the point that we incarcerate far too many people for a variety of insignificant violations. Incarcerations which drain the coffers of the general public and enrich the pockets of the particular agencies doing the incarcerating.
The fundamental flaw is our having strayed from the Biblical concept of law enforcement. In dealing with issues of law, other than murder & rape, God provides us with only one option: restitution. Either the offender provides immediate financial compensation or he works until the payment is met.
There was no punishment for non-capitol crimes. Only restitution. Today, we seek to make people “pay” for their crime by punishing them with incarceration. Of course, this costs all of us. Lots of it. In Biblical law, retribution belonged to God alone, not society. Restitution, not retribution, was the purview of mankind. | In our present culture, it is the innocent who pay for crime through insurance policies and taxes added for correctional institutions. It is a system which is not only funded by an innocent society, but extracts a great price from the families of those incarcerated. Robin Khoury founded a school to remediate these very children. See the captivating story of Little Light Christian School presented at OCPAC earlier this year here. (The presentation begins at the 4-minute mark.)
This has been complicated by the transition from legislative law to case law, the rule-making of countless Regulatory Agencies, and the explosion of legislative activity. Each day in America, thousands of pages are added to our library of rules, regulations, and statutes. Ignorance of these laws is unavoidable not only for the layman, but also for the lawyer who must now become a specialist who engages in continuous research to keep up with the many new esoteric intricacies in his area of expertise.
Apprehended violators face incarceration and its unintended consequences. Oklahoma’s incarceration levels includes more than those serving post-trial prison sentences. We jail thousands of non-violent “offenders” prior to their trial. | Screenwriter, novelist, and Wall Street Journal contributor, Charles Alverson addressed the issue of homosexual rape to which relatively innocent young men are subjected while in prison awaiting trial. He was writing during my college days but his comments remain germane.
Noting the release of a 20-year-old accused car thief and check forger, Charles Alverson tells this story:
“‘This boy simply wouldn’t be safe in a Philadelphia prison,’ the judge explained. ‘Even if he’s guilty, it would be a greater crime to keep him in prison, than to allow him to repeat his offenses.’
Judge Barbieri so ruled because Robert, a slightly built youth, was the victim of homosexual rape several times, perhaps as many as 10 times, while held in pretrial custody here.
Triggered by the disclosure of similar incidents – one involving a 17-year-old victim whose only ‘crime’ was running away from home – a recent two-month investigation found that ‘sexual assaults are epidemic in the Philadelphia prison system.’ Investigators conservatively estimate that in two years there are about 2,000 sexual assaults in jails here.
These assaults aren’t unique to Philadelphia. They are common in many recent metropolitan jails, authorities say. Homosexual rapes recently have been revealed in county and city prisons in Washington, D.C., and its suburbs, and its suburbs and in Chicago, among other places, says E. Preston Sharp, secretary of the American Correctional Association.”
~Charles Alverson, The Jail Jungle, in The Wall Street Journal, Vol LXXX, no. 39, Pacific Coast Edition (Tuesday, February 25, 1969), P. 1.
Only in a society for which the dominating principle is the primordial sovereignty of God are these issues properly understood and dealt with. God created the nations (Genesis 11, 12; Acts 17.) They exist for Him. They are His own. Their authority originates from His sovereignty (Romans 12). As God has said, “By me kings reign.” (Proverbs 8:15)
Our systems of justice would do well to return to the Word of God as a foundation for law and law enforcement.
As a great Puritan once said, “I believe that we shall be under God’s judgement if we neglect to proclaim the whole counsel of God for every realm, church, state, school, philosophy, economics, political science, etc. This is simply asserting, to use the old Reformation battle cry, ‘The Crown Rights of King Jesus’ over every realm.” | FAIR & BIASED Some timely observations by Steve Fair | A few weeks ago, former candidate for U.S. House District 2 spoke at OCPAC regarding the fantasies in the minds of our millennial generation regarding Socialism. This week, Steve Fair wrote an excellent article on the topic.
Read Steve's incisive article, Sacrificing Truth for Relevance here.
Steve Fair is the current Chairman of the 4th district of the Oklahoma Republican Party. He is the former National Committeeman for the Oklahoma Republican Party and former Chairman of the Stephens County Republican Party. | WITH KINDNESS & DEPTH Response to a caustic critic by Pastor Mike Biggs | Last week, OCPAC Vice President, Brian Imes, posted a comment on the OCPAC Facebook page regarding the effort Target stores are making to encourage people to celebrate LGBTQ+ month. A person we don't know (her name is Amy) was offended and and spoke of her disdain for the Bible and for people who read it, believe it, and see life through it. She called it a mythical book. The response from Rev. Mike Biggs was both kind and intellectually thoughtful. You can read it for yourself here. | Equality Act This bill prohibits discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in areas including public accommodations and facilities, education, federal funding, employment, housing, credit, and the jury system. | AFA has engaged with Walmart on the issue of promoting homosexual dating in their stores.
Around Valentine's Day, AFA was alerted that Walmart had launched a gay dating ad on their Facebook page. Citing concerns over the promotion and normalization of homosexuality, AFA and OneMillionMoms.com launched petitions that garnered over 190,000 signers asking Walmart President Doug McMillon to remove the video.
As a result of the petition, senior executives with AFA met with senior executives at Walmart where objections to the video ad were strongly and respectfully articulated. This led to a forthright and engaging discussion about the matter.
The video has rotated off the company's Facebook video spotlight, but remains on the page. AFA asked Walmart to remain neutral on the promotion of homosexuality, and we believe that our concerns were heard. AFA will continue to monitor Walmart as it pertains to the LGBTQ agenda.
AFA has welcomed the opportunity to engage with Walmart on this issue. Thousands of AFA supporters have exhibited their commitment to Christian values in signing the petition. | THE BORDER WALL featuring... Pastor Bruce DeLay Arizona Rancher, Richard Hodges | Last week's presentation "Live from the Border Wall" did not disappoint! It was not crafted to hide the day-to-day actual realities of life as an American citizen living on the U.S. border.
